Jamaica College took part in Mental Health Awareness Day, celebrating with a series of impactful events and conversations aimed at promoting mental well-being among students, faculty, and staff. The observance was part of the global movement to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, which continues to be a growing concern worldwide.

This year’s celebration focused on the importance of understanding and managing mental health, particularly in the fast-paced and often stressful environments that students and staff encounter daily. Nurse Gilpin’s Insightful Session: Nurse Gilpin, a key member of Jamaica College’s medical team, led an insightful session on Mental Health Awareness Day, focusing on the early detection of mental health issues like stress, anxiety, and depression. She highlighted the importance of recognizing warning signs such as persistent sadness and anxiety and shared practical tips for maintaining mental well-being.

These included balancing schoolwork with personal life, practicing self-care through sleep, nutrition, and exercise, and knowing when to seek help. Nurse Gilpin emphasized the importance of reaching out for support and fostering a supportive community, urging students to create an environment where mental health conversations are open and stigma-free. Her message centered on the idea that mental health, like physical health, requires attention and care and that it’s crucial to prioritize it in daily life.


Words from Principal Wayne Robinson: Principal Robinson addressed the students and staff with an impactful message, emphasizing that mental health is just as important as physical health. He encouraged students to take care of their minds and emotions, reminding them that it’s okay to seek help when dealing with stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues. He also spoke about the importance of creating an open, supportive environment where mental wellness is prioritized, reinforcing the message that Jamaica College is committed to helping students manage both academic and personal challenges.


Message from Vice Principal Mr. Wynter: Vice Principal Wynter followed up with a strong appeal for students to break the silence around mental health challenges. He urged the Jamaica College community to recognize that mental struggles are nothing to be ashamed of and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. He reminded students and staff that there are resources and support available and that taking care of mental well-being is a crucial part of leading a fulfilling and balanced life.


Mrs. Cooper-Stewart also contributed to Mental Health Awareness Day with encouraging and thoughtful insights. She emphasized the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness in managing mental health. Her message focused on the need for students to be present, manage stress with calmness, and practice gratitude as a way to maintain a positive mental outlook. By promoting emotional balance and self-compassion, Mrs. Cooper-Stewart reinforced the idea that mental health should be nurtured daily, just as physical health is. Her words added a layer of motivation and mindfulness to the day’s discussions.


Staff Wearing Green in Solidarity: To show support for mental health awareness, the staff of Jamaica College wore green, the symbolic color for mental health, creating a visually united front for the cause. This initiative highlighted the importance of mental well-being and fostered a sense of community and care among students and teachers.
