JC’s CPM Course

Jamaica College’s Construction Project Management Course Deemed a Huge Success:

Mr. Christopher Gore, the Managing Director of Gore Developments Limited (GDL), can be seen here taking the 9th cohort of Construction Project Management (CPM) students from Jamaica College (JC) on a site visit of GDL’s Phoenix Park Village (PPV) Site in St. Catherine. Mr. Gore guided students through the stage-by-stage process of constructing a Gore home.

The CPM course is the brainchild of GDL Chairman and JC Old Boy Mr. Phillip Gore. Professionals and close associates of GDL with years of experience in the fields of architecture, quantity and land surveying, project management and civil engineering, donate their time throughout the school year to give back to the profession and introduce students to the ‘ins and outs’ of construction. The two-week internship on GDL’s PPV site to culminate the course is the highlight of the experience for students and provides them with practical exposure to many of the areas in which they learn about in the classroom. Some of the aspects of the construction process that students are exposed to include: how different types of heavy equipment are used on site; concrete production; drainage, sewer systems and plumbing; Marl pad compaction testing; walls and fencing; welding; quarry operation; steel work and casting; finishing; blasting; and Project Management Systems.

To date, at least 4 students who were exposed to the CPM course have gone on to pursue Civil Engineering and 2 students have gone on to pursue Architecture at the tertiary level. This shows first-hand the impact that imparting this knowledge, honing these skills, and igniting this passion for construction can have in advancing this profession and the skillsets of Jamaicans working in it in the years to come.

Mr. Phillip Gore is extremely proud of this course and of the impact that it has had on students at his alma mater, stating “when I first started this course I saw it as a meaningful opportunity to give back to the profession and to Jamaica College. My goal was to introduce students to the field and open the eyes of the next generation of Jamaican professionals to the various careers that exist within the construction industry that may be of interest to them. 9 years later, I am extremely happy with the course’s progress and the positive influence that it has had on JC students and their chosen career paths. I look forward to seeing many of the graduates of this course go on to become leaders in the field in years to come.”
